Did You Know?: Referral tips
Ensuring members are aware of when and how to get a referral for medical care can ultimately help them avoid unnecessary out-of-pocket costs. UnitedHealthcare Individual & Family Plans (IFP) members are required to get a referral from their primary care provider (PCP) for specialist care in most cases, and the specialist will need to be in-network in order for the visit to be covered. A referral is not needed for:
- Emergency care
- Gynecology
- Mental health care
Depending on the type of plan the member has, there may be additional types of specialist care that do not require a referral. To help members better understand how referrals work, you can share the video below
